ILLEGAL IMPORT OF PARAKEETS

Seaman Fined £5O

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 15. Charles Lee, a seaman, was convicted on a charge of importing six parakeets into New Zealand, contravening import regulations, and was fined £5O in the Auckland Magistrate's Court today. Lee pleaded guilty to the charges before Mr G. J. Donne, SM. For the Customs Department, Mr H. Rosen said that last August customs officials found six parakeets under Lee’s bunk tn the Kurow. Perches had been fitted under the bunk, apd it was evident that the birds had been there for some time. The defendant had not declared the birds. They were handed to Agriculture Department officials and destroyed. The importing of the birds was known to be a lucrative practice, said Mr Rosen, and they sold for as much as £l5 each. For the defendant. Dr. A. M. Finlay said that Lee was genuinely unaware that the Import of these birds was prohibited, and he considered the minimum penalty for this offence appropriate.
