FREE SCHOOL BOOKS

Rises In Quoted Prices

(New Zealand Preet Association) AUCKLAND, January 14. Many books ordered in Auckland for secondary achools under the Government’s free book scheme have proved to be several shillings dearer than the quoted prices. School boards are not sure that the Education Department will pay the bill at the new figure. Invoices received for books ordered have brought some shocks for school boards. The increases multiplied by the hundreds of copies ordered will mean much bigger bills for individual schools The position is believed to be general throughout New Zealand. The highest increase noted is seven shillings. The manager of an Auckland flrm specialising in educational books said today that all quotations were given subject to price fluctuations. The increases were not surprising, as production costs had risen overseas in the last year. Prices were worked on a uniform schedule throughout the country, he said. The increases would be met generally all over New Zealand

The Christchurch Post-Primary Schools’ Council had received no complaints of increases in school book prices, said the secretary <Mr P. J. Halligan). “Many schools had their books at the end of the school year, but I have heard nothing of increases on the:quoted price*,” he said.
