COUNCIL FOR MALTA
“Boycotts Will Not Interfere”
VALETTA (Malta). January 14.
A British Government spokesman said in Valetta today that the refusal of the main Maltese political parties to serve on a nominated council to rule the island while the Constitution is suspended should not prevent the council being "representative.” He told a news conference that the council “might perhaps” be of different form from that originally intended, “but it should still be a representative, cross-section of Maltese life.”
The spokesman told a questioner it was not intended to offer a seat on the council, which would be headed by the Governor, to the Roman Catholic Church. The spokesman said it would be at least a year before a start was likely to be made to try to restore an elected government to the island.
