Royal Betrothal In Japan

(Rec. 7 p.m.) TOKYO, January 14. The Japanese Imperial family to day reported to their enshrined ancestors that their eldest son is to marry a commoner—the first to join the Imperial line in more than 2000 years. The formal betrothal was celebrated today between the families of Emperor Hirohito and Mr and Mrs Hidesaburo Shoda. Emissaries of the Imperial household reported the event to the ancestral shrine at the Grand Shrine of Ise and the mausoleum in Kashiwara, western Japan, and another mausoleum in Tokyo.

Opening the traditional ceremonies, Mr Kikuo Suzuki, chief chamberlain to the 25-year-old Prince, visited the Shoda home this morning with Prince Akihito’s gifts—six bottles of sake, two fresh sea bream, and five rolls of silk.
