SHIP’S (JEW RESCUED

Vessel Springs Bad Leak

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LEGHORN. January 14. Italian tugs today rescued all 34 persons aboard the British ship, Pelayo (2579 tons), which called for assistance after springing a leak three miles off Leghorn, north-west Italy. The 34 included two English passengers, who were on a pleasure cruise. The order to abandon ship went out at about 3 a.m. G.M.T., after the Pelayo had radioed that she was leaking badly. Italian tugs raced to her aid and warships stood by. As the passengers and most of the crew took to the boats, a handful of men, including the captain, stayed behind in the Pelayo and were rescued later. This group included the chief engineer and the radio operator. The passengers and crew were sent to hotels after being brought ashore. An official at the harbourmaster’s office said later that the Pelayo was believed to have hit some rocks about 550 yards outside the harbour entrance and three miles from the shore.

He said the ship appeared to be in grave condition with a starboard list. The tugs were still trying to save her.
