Reporting By Matchlight

Reporters of “The Press” began the account of last evening’s power failure in Christchurch, by matchlight. Power failed in the Christchurch Press Company building at 9.34 p.m., printing machinery being brought to a standstill, and the whole building plunged into darkness.

Reporters Immediately began seeking information over telephones on the extent of the power failure; and its effect on the night life of the city. Matches were struck to find and dial telephone numbers, and until a messenger was sent out to buy packets of candles, reporters had to make their notes in the dark.

All printing machines and staff were idle for 20 minutes until the Press Company’s stand-by plant was brought into operation.
