Composting

Sir,—Recently a fire was attributed to a compost heap. How many amateur composters keep the rules? Do all put earth or sawdust to prevent flies and smell, or- just souse the lot in rank disinfectant? How many heaps are adjacent to fences, sheds, dwellings, etc, belonging to other persons? How many acrid rubbish fires produce evil smelling ash scattered as compost and rising rankly with every dew in odour, or well stirred by any breeze. Is it not time to begin city composting work (well out of the city) for safety, health, and profit? The product of waste. treated along with sewage is a successful project for city councils aware of the gains elsewhere.—Yours, etc, WHY NOT HERE? January 8, 1958.
