Second Tour
Rabone after the English tour was one of New Zealand’s soundest and most reliable batsmen, and his off-spin bowling brought wickets in steadily. His second overseas tour also took place in rather peculiar circumstances. He was not available for this tour, but half-way through the final trial he arrived at Christchurch, and a few days later it was announced that he would lead the team.
The South African tour of 195354 was not an outstanding success for New Zealand, but Rabone’s contribution was excellent. He fought hard from first to last, and the first test at Durban was
a triumph for him. Against Neil Adcock, quite the fastest bowler the New Zealanders had faced, he batted without flinching for hour after hour, although when it was all over about five feet of his left side was blue with bruises. He batted in all more than nine hours in this match, for scores of 108 and 68; only one other batsman exceeded 30.
