U.K. Press Doubts
(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 14.
Some doubts about the timing and effectiveness of the Belgian Government's proposals for the Belgian Congo were expressed in today’s British press. “Only a few years ago, the Colonial Office in Brussels were speaking in terms of self-govern-ment in 50 years or so,” the “Manchester Guardian" said. “Since then, the long dormant political instinct of Africans in the Congo has begun to manifest Itself, and Brussels has had to
move rapidly to catch up with it.” “Has it moved rapidly enough?” it asked.
The “Daily Teelgraph” said: “It is highly unfortunate that this announcement should follow close on the tail of violence. “One of the most acute subjects of debate among Africans today is about the most effective method of wresting their Continent from the Europeans. “Dr. Nkrumah pleaded eloquently at the recent All-African conference at Accra for a nonviolent approach.
