Sportsman’s Notebook Record Entries For Swimming Titles

A record 363 entries—43 more than last year—had been received by the. Canterbury Swimming Centre for the provincial championships which begin in the Centennial Pool on Saturday. Every club affiliated to the centre, except Air Force and Sheffield are represented. “The entries are excellent, and heats have had to be introduced in events which have not required them before,’’ said the secretary of the centre (Miss D. Brown) yesterday. She said it was almost certain several new Canterbury records would be established, especially since those swimmers who had taken part in the centre’s calisthenic classes were at peak physical fitness. “I think these championships

will prove beyond doubt the worth of these classes,” she said.

All Canterbury swimming enthusiasts will welcome the return to competitive swimming of Colin McFadden who holds the New Zealand 440 yards and 1650 yards freestyle titles and records. He has been training hard lately and should again monopolise the distance events. SS « » Life-Saving Awards The Canterbury branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society has every reason to feel proud of its instruction this season. Until the end of December, 2137 awards were won by swimmers compared with last year’s record of 1780. Shot Put Record In the final of the zonal athletic meeting at Auckland last Saturday, L. R. Mills put the shot 55ft lOin to add Ift 7in to his existing New Zealand resident mark. With more opportunity for competition over the next few weeks Mills should gn close to realising his ambition of break** ing the all-comers’ record of 58ft 4in held by the world and Olympic champion, W. P. O’Brien, of the United States. s* * * Roller Skating Rink The Tawa Flat roller skating rink, at present being built, will p ssibly be the finest rink in New Zealand. It has a single slab concrete floor which will be protected against contraction and expansion. The Tawa Flat Progressive and Ratepayers’ Association conceived the idea of the rink, because of the lack of recreational facilities in the area. Most of the work has been done by voluntary labour. # * $ Tennis Competitions The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s inter-club competitions will resume on Saturday after the holiday break with the senior mixed grade at the United club’s courts in the morning and the first grade and the first section of the second grade at Wilding Park in the afternoon.
