Fewer Absentees In Factories

There are fewer absentees this week in Christchurch factories which have reopened after the Christmas-New Yfear holidays. At most there are about 6 per cent, away. One dry-cleaning firm reported no absentees: “Quite a surprise.” The manager of a rubber mill said that all of his men were back at work, but that quite a lot of the women had not yet returned. Of the men, he said: “I think their wives are probably shoo-ing them back to work.” In many plants where absenteeism at this time of year runs at about 10 per cent, it has been halved.
