PAIRS FINAL

Whitiora Beats Carlton

(New Zealand Press Association)

January 13. With their two lives intact, G. an< * H. J. Thompson (Whitiora) had a notable win in the final of the pairs at the national bowling championships in’Wellington today. It was the first tournament in which they had played as a pair. They easily beat a capable Carlton pair, J. R. Trayes and W P. O’Neill, in the final. The score was 26-9, and the result seldom in doubt. Two ends were un-

Bradley, who has been playing bowls for only five years, was a most able lead for Thompson, who, though a well-performed player, had not had a success in major tournaments.

Wellington’s main hope for the pairs title, R. Graham (Johnsonville), comfortably took third place in a play-off with R. S. S. Gray (Wanganui East). Graham won by 26 points to 13. O’Neill could not have been very happy when he stepped on to the green to meet Thompson He had the formidable task of beating the Whitiora pair twice to take the title. Eventful Fourth End

As the game progressed, Carlton had even less cause to be happy. It scored singles on the first two ends, conceded one, then lost five on an eventful fourth end.

Two more singles kept Carlton in the picture, but the Whitiora pair then fairly bounded ahead. A three-one-five burst had Whitiora 15-14 in front. From then on O’Neill and Trayes could manage only an occasional single while their opponents scored fairly steadily The Whitiora pair did not have to chase points, only to ensure that Carlton did not do any spectacular scoring. Graham was ahead of Gray nearly all the way in the other game.

Results:— Final.—G. Bradley and H. J. Thompson (Whitiora) 26, J. R. Trayes and W. P. O’Neill (Carlton) 9. For third place: D. H Mason and R. Graham (Johnsonville) 26, J. W. Cook and R. S. 8. Gray (Wanganui
