Obituary ARCHDEACON W. T. WILLIAMS

Archdeacon W. T. Williams, who had been archdeacon of Akaroa 4nd Ashburton since 1949, and vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Avonside. since 1948. died yesterday at Anakiwa. near Picton, where he had been on holiday He waa 53. Archdeacon Williams was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School and College House. Christchurch. and graduated from the' University of New Zealand, B.A\ (1929), M.A. (1930), and secured his licentiate of theology in 1933. He gained a diploma in social science in 1931. He was ordatned deacon in 1930

and priest in 1931. After serving as curate of Timaru (1930-33). be was vicar of Mount Somers from 1933 to 1938. He was vicar of Phillipstown between 1938 and 1941. He was a R.NZ.A.F chaplain in 1941-46. He served at Wigram. and in the Pacific from 1944 to 1945. For his war-time service be was awarded the M.B.E m 1946 and the same year was appointed vicar of Belfast-Burwood In 1948, he became vicar of Avonside and rural dean of East Christchurch. Archdeacon Williams became archdeacon of Akaroa and Ashburton in 1949. He is survived by his mother. Mrs M. Williams, of Christchurch, two brothers and two sisters. The funeral service wig be held at Holy Trinity* Avonside, at 11 a-m. on Saturday.

MR H. B. BURNETT A former secretary and trea-. surer of the Greymouth Harbour Board, Mr H. B. Burnett, has died in Auckland after an accident He was 88. Appointed secretary to the Auckland Harbour Board m 1910. Mr Burnett also became treasurer two years later. In 1925 he relinquished the latter post and was made secretary and superintendent to the board, a post which he held until his retirement in 1935. Born in Belfast Northern Ireland, Mr Burnett came to Few Zealand as a child. His father was a Presbyterian missionary. Mr Burnett matriculated in Christchurch, and joined the Union Steam Ship Company, later becoming purser in ships in New Zealand and on intercolonial services. After seven years at sea he took a position with two mining companies. and from 1900 to 1910 was secretary and treasurer of the Greymouth Harbour Board.

MR R. A. NICOLAS Mr R. A. Nicolas, a member of many business and trade associations, has died in Rotorua Hospital, aged 56. Born in Auckland in 1902, Mr Nicolas was. when he died, president of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association and a council member of the New Zealand Manufacturers’. Federation He had been Joint president ot the New Zealand Easter Show since 1956 arid chairman of the Easter Show Committee during 1957-58. president of the New Zealand Manufacturing Engineers and Meta) Trades’ Federation from 1992 to 1957, chairman of the Auckland Manufacturing Engineers and Metal Trades’ Group from the same year until yy president of the Penrose Industrial Progress Association Iran 1959 to 1956.
