KIDNAPPING CHARGE

Infant Found In New York

NEW YORK, January 12. A baby believed to be the kidnapped Chignchio infant has been found safe in New York, police said today. The infant was found in the Brooklyn flat of Mrs Jean lavarone, aged 43, a widow with seven children.

Mrs lavarone denied taking the baby from St. Peter’s Hospital two hours and a half after its birth on January 2, police said. But the chief of detectives (Mr James Leggett) said the woman would be charged with kidnapping.

The child has not as yet been positively identified as Lisa Rose Chionchio. Mr Leggett said the woman insisted that the baby found in her flat was born to her on the night of January 2. She told police she delivered the baby herself. Mr Leggett said a medical examination of the woman “shows there has been no birth nine days ago.” The detective chief said the blood type of the baby taken to St. Peter’s Hospital was the same as that of Lisa Rose.

Mr Leggett also said the blood type of the baby was different to that of the prisoner or the man named by her as the father. City detectives and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents found the woman and the baby from a tip telephoned to the police. Mr Leggett refused to name the caller.
