TWO FORMS OF MARRIAGE
London Lawyer’s Contention
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) , LONDON, January 11. People should be allowed to register a marriage and then’ go to an office and register a divorce if they want to, a distinguished barrister advocated, according to the “People.” The barrister (Mr Cyril Harvey. Q.C.) put forward this contention in the Conservative magazine “Crossbow,” published by a Conservative “Ginger” group. The result has been a storm of protest from prominent Conservative leaders, and an outcry from religious 'leaders, the newspaper said. There should be two forms of marriage, Mr Harvey said. The “contractualists” should be allowed the sort of marriage they want. Then if they want it dissolved, let them go and register a divorce. The “sacramenta lists” would have their marriages ordained by the book of Common Prayer. It is wrong, he says, that judges should have to devote their time to the business of making divorce look difficult when Parliament was bent on making it easier.
