CRAFT CENTRE

Painting School Begins

The only Craft Centra in New Zealand began a five-day painting school for 14 enthusiasts from various parts of the country yesterday. Mostly women, they came from Wellington and the West Coast, as well as Canterbury. Today their activities will be near the Cathedral and the Department of Agriculture in the I Provincial Council Chambers. Landscape, composition, interior and figure work will all be taught by Miss Yvonne Rust, well-known in art circles, who has previously taught in Christchurch schools. Paintings, pottery and basketwork—the main activities of the centre—will be on display in a coflee lounge in the city today. Work done by pupils at the centre has been placed around the pleasant house at 116 Springfieldroad, the headquarters, since last July. Since its beginning, work at the centre has included a large number of experiments, especially with New Zealand materials, which are used almost exclusively. Showing one of the kilns, Mr J. Nelson, the pottery instructor, said that they were being made for schools at about a third of the cost of English models. A 10-day pottery school will be held by the Craft Centre, and a further school for art teachers in Christchurch will begin on February 12.
