The grants by various states in America to their universities could only be described as munificent, said Professor E. Beaglehole, of Victoria University of Wellington, on his return in the Southern Cross from England today. He spent six months’ refresher leave in the United States and visited Britain.

The grants, he said, were munificent in a way New Zealand could not. approach. This applies as much to provincia} American universities which were comparable with New Zealand’s. V-
