Labour’s Record

Sir.—When Labour took power in 1935 this country was over the slump of 1930-33 and we were, in a boom with around £47 mflliotr in overseas funds. In 1938 we were down to around £7| million. In 1939 Hitler commented on “that bankrupt little country in the South Seas” (New Zealand) declaring war on Germany. Well we replied by being heavily taxed for war. Much of this tax was left on till 1949, when we had great reductions all round. Now in 1959 Labour is for peace at any price so we are now heavily taxed for this peace.—Yours, etc., G.H.W. January 12, 1959. Sir,—Does “Liberal” take everyone else for fools? That old gag that social security benefits are hand-outs and are other people’s money is a lie. Because he pays the social security levy an individual may receive all the benefits the act entitles him to. He has paid for them. It is amazing that an unbiased newspaper does not ban such lying statements.—Yours, etc., A.F.P. [The social security charge does not, of course, cover the full cost of _ social security.—Ed.. “The Press.”]

Sir, —In reply to “Far Back Dan” I was not moaning about the family benefit. A. Clifford consoled himself with the idea that the family benefit circulates. I said it was very easy indeed to circulate other people’s money Does “Far Back Dan” know the children’s few shillings amounts to £3O million? I am sure it is more by this time. That includes the rich and not so rich. They say there are no poor in the Welfare State; the only thing that is poor is the country.—Yours, etc., LIBERAL.
