Tobacco Prices

Sir, —Much has been said for and against the publican and his beer sales, but as was pointed out by a correspondent, he has the ex brewery trade now in Christchurch, at least, which should set him up not so badly. Little has been heard of the poor tobacconist who has been worse hit than the hotels. His margin was always light and is now around 8 per cent., with an extra 40 per cent, of capital to find and prompt payment required by merchants which, considering their outlay is natural. How the grocer giving credit can do it beats me. As a tobacconist with a reasonable turnover I can say the turnover is down 3Q per cent., and tobacco is barely paying wages. It is not picking up either. A little sympathy would be much appreciated from your correspondents, but a little of the relief being given to the hotels, diverted to us would be appreciated more.— Yours, etc.,

TAX COLLECTOR. January 11, 1959.
