TROTTING Favourites Routed At Washdyke On Saturday
Supporters of favourites had a shocking run on the first day of the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. Not one favourite was successful and only two—-Chances Are and Gambling Princess—returned place dividends. The largest win dividend of £56 7s 6d was returned by Rovindale, winner of the Taiko Handicap. A winner on the West Coast holiday circuit, Rovindale was at a false price.
Another winner on the West Coast in Kerry Queen won the levels Handicap and paid £44 2s Outsiders filled all the placings in the Taiko Handicap, all three returning double-figure place dividends. Queues at the pay-out windows after the race were the shortest seen for many years. The first leg, the Kerrytown Handicap, was marked by the failure of the hot odds-on favourite, Bargee, which could do no better than fourth. The winner was the consistent Daisy Doro, which beat First Night, a stablemate of Rovindale. Queen Ngaio received a good run throughout the second leg, the John Hole Memorial Handicap, and she won decisively by a neck from the lightly-supported Keff, which came home well. Queen Ngaio was driven by K. Chapman, who had won earlier in the day with Fernleaf. The Daisy Doro-Queen Ngaio combination returned £25 9s for £l. The meeting was held in perfect weather before a moderate attendance. The' track was fast, but very dusty, the horses being obscured racing out of the straight. Drivera and horses had difficulty obtaining a clear view and this contributed to the number of incidents which occurred throughout the day. It is understood a water cart will be available next Saturday. The failures of the favourites contributed to a large extent to the substantial drop in totalisator figures The total for the day was £37,940 10s, including £3709 on the double, compared with £50,013 last year
