PUBLISHED IN 1958
N.Z. WRITERS These authors contributed not only to the output and variety of books written by New Zealanders and published in 1958 but to the quality and maturity that marked the year’s New Zealand writing. Sylvia Ashton-Warner’s “Spinster,” M. K. Joseph’s “I’ll Soldier No More,” and lan Cross’s “The God Boy” made a notable bracket of first novels that were well received both here and overseas. (A picture of Mr Cross appears elsewhere on this page). Mary Scott, Ruth France, Snd Elizabeth Messenger displayed New Zealand life in widely different settings—Mary Scott’s novel having rural life as its background and Ruth France’s novel a Lyttelton-Wellington yacht race, while Elizabeth Messenger’s mystery story is set in Queen Charlotte Sound. Alan Mulgan’s “The Making of a New Zealander” tells of the upbringing and life of a man who has worked with words in New Zealand for 60 years.
