FIGHTING IN MALAYA

Final Phase May

Begin Soon

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON, January 2. All is now ready for what could prove to be the final phase in the 10 year effort to rid Malaya of Communists says the “Yorkshire Post’s” special correspondent in Malaya. Spearheading th.s attack on the ground he says, will be seven Commonwealth battalions totalling more than 7000 men. Never before have so many troops been deployed* not even when there were ten times as many Communists hiding in the jungle. There will be three Malayan Infantry battalions, the 2nd arid 6th Ghurkas, the Ist Royal Australians, the Ist New Zealanders, and the first battalion Loyal Regiment of North Lancashire.

The correspondent says the operation is being directed in Ipoh and that a total of 147 hard core terrorists will be on the run from now on.

He mentions incidentally that at a frizzling 92 in the shade the Loyals insisted on playing a Rugby Union fixture with the local sports club at Ipoh. They lost 16-18 but the locals have been reinforced by five Maoris from the New Zealand battalion:
