Close Finish In Yacht Race

(N.Z. Press Association— CopvHaht) (Rec. 10 p.m.) HOBART, Jan. 1. The Sydney sloop, Siandra, has won the- Sydney-Hobart race on handicap after the most exciting finish in the history of the race. Anitra will probably be second and Southern Myth third. Siandra had until nearly 11 p.m. yesterday to beat Anitra on handicap and she crossed the line at 9.8 p.m. A puff of wind won the race for her. Half an hour before she finished, the Derwent was a millpond south of the finish and Siandra might have taken all night to cover the last two miles. Solo, the 57ft Sydney cutter, took the line honours. She was followed, less than 14 minutes later by the 52ft Victorian yawl, Winston Churchill skippered by Sir Arthur Warner.
