Comets For Egypt

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, January 2. President Nasser of the United Arab Republic is ready to place a £3 million order for Comet jet airliners, according to the. “Daily Herald.” They are for Egypt’s airline.

The newspaper said this meant Britain had beaten off strong competition from the Russians, who had urged President Nasser to buy their TU-104 and TU-114 airliners.

The deal depended on talks started yesterday in Cairo to settle the money squabbles between Britain and Egypt which followed the Suez invasion. Egypt has £BO million “frozen" in British banks, which- President Nasser cannot touch. Both countries are claiming compensation for damage to property during the crisis. A Paris message says the United Arab Republic has paid £4,100.000 to the Suez Finance Company as part of the compensation for the nationalisation of the Suez Canal.
