SWIM FOR A BET
Surfers 9 Search In Estuary
A 35-year-old Englishman who took a bet to swim from Shag Rock. Sumner, across the mouth of the Estuary to South Brighton. in his underpants, disrupted the work of 10 members of the Sumner Surf Life-saving Club when he was reported in difficulty yesterday afternoon. The club members were organising the start of the New Year’s Day gala when a report was received that the man was in difficulty. Ten members of the club, some carrying surf skis, ran half a mile along the beach to Shag Rock and started a search;
Nearly an hour later, a senior member of the club, N. Webb, saw the man nearing the South Brighton shore and escorted him in. The other persons he had taken the bet with had driven from Shag Rock to South Brighton with his clothing. The / man said he regretted causing the club any trouble, and that he realised it was a foolish thing to do.
