Big Fire In California
(Rec. 11 pan.) TOPANGA CANYON (California) December 31. A bushfire, believed to have been started by a firebug, burst through the Santa Monica Mountains today. It burned several homes in its first two hours and threatened hundreds of others. Thousands fled from its path. The blaze broke out this morning on the Inland side of the mountains, which separate the San Fernando Valley from the sea. Two hours later a second fire broke out only two miles away in the exclusive community of Woodland Hills. It, too, threatened homes. Some 700 homes were threatened as the fire was reported to be completely out of control. Smoke was visible from Los Angeles, 30 miles to the esst Some 75# men were fighting the fire within four hours. Three firemen were injured.
