Waimairi Affairs
Sir,-5 find many ratepayers and residerls of WaimiSri County share -ny concern at- the recent dep|ord)le happenings in our county council. Twa councillors of (presumably) different political leadings, both highly regarded aildginf that the cotanci] is run, in effet, by a’ clique who put their »wn interests before the interess of the county The chairman’s comments on the resignations seem to confirm that the intrusion of personal ambitions has cost the county the services cf two of its most useful councillors For the information of the public, would Mr Reynolds explain how these committee chaitmen came to be unseated so soon after their election and without being given a chance to show their worth in positions? This seems to be a shabby hole-and-corner business, the very reverse of “sportsmanship ” —Yours, etc..

[“The statement 1 made to *The Press’ previously on Waimairi Couity Council affairs covered the position adequately in my opinion.” said Mr H J. Reynolds, chairman’ of the council, when he was asked to comment on this letter. “I feel the business was a domestic affair However, in reply to your correspondent, ‘Fendalton.' and in ’fairness to those responsible for the changes, the council, by a provision in standing orders, has the right to discharge and elect chairmen of committees as it thinks fit Meetings of the council are open to the public and seating accommodation is available Finally, 1 agree wholeheartedly with the last sentence in your correspondent’s letter.”]
