ENDEAVOUR NEARS McMURDO SOUND

Assistance By U.S. Icebreaker

The Antarctic supply ship, H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour, is being escorted through the ice to McMurdo Sound by the United States Navy icebreaker, Staten Island.

According to a message received at the United States Antarctic expedition’s headquarters last evening, the two ships were off Beaufort Island, at the head of

McMurdo Sound. The United States expedition has also received a request from the Endeavour for fresh water and additional fuel. The two United States ships, Wyandot and Nespelen, are now at McMurdo Sound. The Wyandot is unloading cargo and the Nespelen is pumping aviation fuel to shore tanks, the message says.
