NEW YEAR FOURS TOURNEY

Inter-Club Event At Linwood

Only four fours remained unbeaten after the first three rounds of the New Year fours tournament held at the Linwood Bowling Club yesterday. The successful teams were those of L. Milliken (Canterbury), S. W. Porter (Linwood), and L. Spence (Amberley), each with three wins, and W. C. Dailey (Fendalton), two wins and a draw.

Twenty-eight fours are taking part in the tournament. The final three rounds of the fours will be played today, and the jubilee pairs tournament will begin tomorrow. The pairs event is being held as part of the celebrations of the club’s fiftieth year. Milliken’s four met another previously unbeaten four skipped by T. Snee (Fendalton) in the third round, but Milliken gained too big a lead mid-way through the game and won 21-16. Dailey’s team established an imposing lead over R. C. Fisher (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club), only to lose points to Fisher towards the end of the match and eventually tie 22-22.

S. J. Snedden's Linwood four was soundly beaten by H. P. Rennie (Fendalton), 22-11, in the first round, but won its second and third round matches. R. Vinten (St. Albans) was unbeaten until the third round, when he had a close match with H. W. Cameron (Christchurch R.S.A.) and lost by one point on the final end of the game. Cameron won 18-17.

The matches were played in ideal weather.
