Rowing REGATTA AT PICTON

Canterbury Club Does Well

The annual rowing regatta at Picton was held successfully, although a fresh northerly wind in the late afternoon made difficulties for the crews and almost caused a postponement of some races. The oarsmen’s watermanship was then tested fully by the following wind and choppy water. The outstanding race of the regatta was the senior eight, which the Canteroury Rowing Club won narrowly in a blanket finish from Wairau, Picton. and Avon. Canterbury gained a half-length lead in the first quarter-mile of the onemile and a quarter course, and increased it to three-quarters of a length after half a mile. From there, however, Wairau and Picton closed gap and the last few hundred yards saw a desperate struggle, with Canterbuary just able to cross the finishing line, two feet in front of Wairau. with Picton a canvas back in third place. The senior fours race also resulted in an exciting finish. Wairau overtook Star 50 yards from the finishing line after a long chase and won by three feet. Close finishes were a feature of the regatta, and many crews showed encouraging form for the time of the season.

The Canterbury Rowing Club, which won £5l, was the most successful club at the regatta, the next best club being Wairau. which won £43 The Canterbury Rowing Club secured wins in the senior eight, junior pairs, youths’ four and youths’ pair. Results.—
