RESTAURANTS TO CLOSE

Holiday Break Next Month

Although Christchurch hotels in January will be full of overseas tourists, most of them Australians, New Zealanders on holiday, and spectators for one international gathering, a national tournament, and interprovincial sports fixtures, three of the city’s leading restaurants will be putting up their shutters.

“Although we have the world roller skating championships, the New Zealand tennis tournament, two Plunket Shield cricket matches and other fixtures, as well as heavy advance holiday bookings, these three restaurants will be'closing for various periods between Christmas Eve and late January,” said the Canterbury public relations officer (Mr E. G. Beckett), yesterday. Tasman Empire Airways have scheduled six flights a week from Australia during January, and every plane will be almost full—or completely booked, said a spokesman last evening. The National Airways Corporation bookings, too, are heavy. “It would seem a pity that these restaurants, which are popular with our overseas tourists, and New Zealanders on holiday, should choose this time of the year to close,” said Mr Beckett.
