A Mexican bus hit two pedestrians. skidded out of control, and turned over yesterday, killing 72 persons, in one of Mexico’s worst highway accidents. The accident occurred 40 miles south-east of Oaxaca. The two pedestrians and 70 persons aboard the bus were killed. Aboard the bus, bound for Tlacolula from Oaxaca City, were 69 passengers, the driver, conductor, and the bus line owner. Julio Ortiz Diaz.

The conductor and a 15-year-old Indian girl were rescued, but both were seriously injured. Sixty of the passengers were Indians on their way to Tlacolula to do their Christmas shopping. After the driver tried to avoid the pedestrians, he lost control of the bus, which crashed over a six-foot embankment and turned over.

Bodies were scattered over an area of 100 yards. People quickly gathered at the scene, looking for friends or kin. There were cries and shouts, weeping and cursing. Ambulances, doctors, nurses, and police arrived soon after.

The bus was demolished by the impact.
