NEW BRITISH TANKS
Announcement By War Minister (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 22. The Minister of War (Mr Christopher Soames) stated in the House of Commons that the new British medium tank would undergo development trials at the end of 1959. The tank, he said, had many novel features. Mr Soames also announced that the production of the heavy gun tank, the 65-ton Conqueror, would cease. A few more of the heavy medium tank 49-ton Centurion would be made for foreign buyers, and the Centurion would remain in service until replaced by the new medium tank.
The “Daily Telegraph” military correspondent states it may be supposed that meanwhile the Centurion might well be given a heavier gun than its existing 20pounder. The new tendency in tank construction was to insist on mobility, low silhouette, endurance, and gunpower, all at the expense of armour.
