RESERVE BANK RETURN Sterling Holdings Rise To £47.6m The Reserve Bank’s holdings of sterling exchange increased by £3.lm in the week ended December 17, according to the return of the Bank as at that date. On December 10, the holdings totalled £44.5m, but by the date of the latest return this had been increased to £47.6m. The total value of bank notes on issue by the Bank increased a further £3.3m during the week, further evidence of the demand for funds for spending at Christmas. Deposits at the Reserve Bank by the Government fell by £B.lm during the week, from £ 19.1 m to £ 10.9 m. Deposits of the trading banks also fell during the week, and are now at £49.1m. Advances to the State were reduced by £ 11.2 m, and now stand at £33.8m. WANGANUI WOOL CATALOGUE (Nero Zealana Preus Association) WANGANUI, Dec. 22. There is no prospect of the catalogue for Wanganui’s March wool sale closing before the holidays, Mr V. Dennison, president of the Wanganui Woolbrokers’ Association, said today. He denied rumours that the closure would be before Christmas. The catalogue probably would not. in fact, close until mid-January. Up to this morning, the brokers had not quite reached the half-way mark in the 30,000bale allocation.
