Ashley Cooper Extended
The Spaniard, Andres Gimeno, in taking the Wimbledon and United States champion, Ashley Cooper to five sets in the semifinals of the Victorian singles championship recently, was highly praised by critics for his display. Cooper lost the first set 1-6 and was then forced to produce his best tennis to beat Gimeno 1-6, 13-11. 11-9, 5-7, 6-3. The former Australian Davis Cup star, Adrian Quist, said that Gimeno attacked on almost every ball, and his passing shots and perfectly-concealed lobs were delightful. Cooper led two sets to one, and it was thought he would have an easy win in the fourth set, but Gimeno used his long reach to cut off Cooper’s passing shots, stole the net away from him, and won the set 7-5. Play was even in the last set, and at one stage it looked as if Gimeno would win, but at the critical stage Cooper exerted enough pressure and used his more extensive experience, to win the set and the match. Quist said later that Gimeno should reach the highest rung in tennis in less than two years.
