Beefeaters Stand Firm

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, December 17.

The Beefeaters who guard the ancient Tower of London stood firm tonight in their determination to take action against a Government decision to raise their rents. Thirty-six Yeomen of the Guard have been told by the Ministry of Works that their normal rent of 5s a week for tower apartments will be roughly quadrupled by next October. The Beefeaters, supported by their union, have retaliated with a threat to “work to rules” (a ban on any extra duties). After a meeting tonight, Mr Leslie Moody, assistant secretary of the Civil Service Union, said: “The lads regarded these extra duties they had done in the past as something they did in return for accommodation.”
