The New Zealand Players Theatre Trust Board invites applications for the position of Artistic Director for 1960, the successful applicant to grant to the Board an option to extend the contract for 1961, with the possibility of further extensions by mutual agreement. The post will become vacant because Mr Stafford Byrne, the present Artistic Director, has advised the Board that he is unable to accept an extension of his present engagement which concludes at the end of 1959. The Artistic Director is directly responsible to the Board for production nd artistic policy. Five major productions, together with a Drama Quartet playing in secondary schools for three months, are rehearsed each year at the Board’s headquarters in Wellington, and then toured throughout New Zealand. In addition there are some subsidiary theatre activities, including training of student actors and studio presentations of New Zealand written or experimental plays. Workshops and rehearsal rooms are large and efficiently run by a full-time staff headed by a permanent designer. Financial and general administration and publicity are controlled by the General Manager also directly responsible to the Board.
