MEMORIAL AVENUE

Sealing Before Holidays

A further step In the reconstruction of Memorial avenue will be taken today with the sealing of a stretch of roading at the airport end. The contractor, Mr N. Isaac, said yesterday that the section of 25 chains to be sealed from the airport entrance to Russley road would virtually complete work on that section. Also planned to be done was the about the entrance and the Russley roadMemorial highway intersection. He described the job as “a big seal.”

Held up in the last week or so by unfavourable weather the contractor plans to push ahead with sealing as rapidly as possible. The next stage will be the south-west side of the highway from Russley road part way along to Woolridge road. It is hoped to do this before Christmas. Three Weeks Break

Not due for completion until April 20, the work will close down on Tuesday for three weeks. The contractors will be watering the portion of unsealed road open to through traffic each day. Closed portions, which are for use only by persons whose homes are there, will not be watered unless directed by the consulting engineers on the job.

Mr Isaac said that he appreciated that dust along the road was causing a nuisance to some residents and he was in sympathy with them. This week one of the company’s two water carts had broken down and there might have been more dust about.

He added that if “through” traffic would observe detour instructions residents along the unsealed closed areas of the road (which under the contract his company was not required to water uless specifically directed) then the nuisance would be much less.

Also working on the highway with the road construction organisation are the Post and Telegraph Department, Municipal Electricity Department and a drainage contractor’s engineers.
