LILY SOCIETY’S DISPLAY
“Of course we do not own the name Christmas lily; they are all Regal lilies,” an executive member of the New Zealand Lily Society (Mr A. I. C. McKillop) said as he gazed at three or four of the 20 species displayed in The Farmers’, Cashel street. And they all looked like Christmas lilies—same perfume and shape, but ivory through to fuchsia pink and there were even some buttercup yellow blooms. The flowers were nearly all strong colours, especially very bright orange and vivid purple. There was one at least six feet high and another more like 12 feet.
Although these lilies have all grown quite normally in gardens, they did not look ordinary, and they were not, for the society members have spent years perfecting their strains. Several are commercial growers. The display was not competitive, but one trophy has been awarded. The Deal Cup for the best bloom was given to Mrs I. Wood for her Brownii lily, a green-throated waxy white bloom with the outside of the petals a purple.
