This figure has been calculated from estimates made by district officers of the Department of Agriculture.
“This figure is no less than 3,000,000 above the previous record lambing of the 1957 season.’’ said Mr Boord. “New Zealand now has 30,878,000 breeding ewes, which is also a record, being an increase of approximately 2,000,000 on last year’s figure.’’
The lambing represents an average percentage of 100.52, which exceeds the previous record percentage of . 97.27 of 1953.
“The South Island percentage of 106.32 is the highest ever recorded, exceeding the previous record figure of 104.09 in 1957. “The North Island percentage also showed a substantial increase from 90.86 in 1957 to 95.43 this year.” Mr Boord said the further large increases in lambs and ewes was confirmation of the dividends to be gained from land development and improvement. As was the case last year, lambing was favoured by excellent conditions.
