Yachting TROPHY FOR FINN CLASS RACES
Canterbury Contest Proposed A Canterbury Finn class championship may be held in April for the first time, for a trophy which \will be presented by the president of the Canterbury Yachting Association (Mr W. H. Beanland). This was revealed at a meeting of the association last evening. “Mr Beanland wants to present a trophy for the Canterbury Finn championship. It has been suggested that the competition be held over four races and under Olympic conditions,” said Mr F. Simpson. Mr Beanland: It would be under the auspices of the association, but the conditions would be what the Finn owners’ association desire. Mr Simpson: This year our club (Christchurch) has a club championship, the Barton trophy, for Finns, and we are going to throw it open to other club members. Mr B. Wall said that he hoped the event would not be held permanently at the Christchurch club as it was detrimental to a class for a race to be- held at a fixed venue. He moved that the suggestion of the event be referred to the Finn owners’ association and that they refer their recommendations back to the Canterbury association. Water Ski Lanes
The association will ask yachtsmen to keep clear of access lanes laid down for water skiers. This was decided after considerable discussion. Mr Beanland said that lanes had been allotted to the water skiers on Lyttelton Harbour but that although bathers were not permitted to swim in these areas he was not sure whether yachtsmen were also supposed to keep away from the lanes. “Don’t you think as yachtsmen we should keep out? As yachtsmen are given a pretty fair go, we should give them that area and be done with it,” said Mr D. Smith. Mr H. S. Thomas (Banks Peninsula Cruising Club) said that he did not think tne water ski lanes would greatly interfere with his club’s races. Delegates Parents of competitors should not be allowed to act as delegates representing their children at provincial yacht trials, said Mr Simpson. “I would like to see it as an association rule—not for those yachtsmen going away from the province, but for local trials.” he said. The Takapuna class trials held this season were some of the best for several years, but a few years ago trouble had been caused at these trials by parents of competitors who were also the club delegates representing these competitors, said Mr Simpson. “The father could be placed in a rather awkward position. -He could have a vote on something or have an opinion on a protest, but as he is connected with a boy his opinion does not carry any weight. I think wherever possible clubs should endeavour to have delegates other than parents of boys,” said Mr Wall. Mr Beanland suggested that the delegates refer the problem to their clubs and report back to the association.
An Otago remit to the Idlealong conference that hollow masts be allowed for this class was opposed by the association. Members felt that hollow masts would probably weigh as much as solid ones and would continue to break until one was perfected. Another remit, that the Olympic points system replace the Clive Highet system in the Idlealong titles, was rejected in deference to Mr Highet. Messrs H. England and C. Holland were appointed Canterbury delegates to the Idlealong conference in Napier, and Mr C. Tyson was appointed Canterbury delegate to the Tanner Cup conference at Charteris Bay in January. Canterbury’s withdrawal from the Sanders Cup this season was confirmed.
