OARO HOUSE DESTROYED
Nothing Saved From Fire
A three-roomed wooden cottage was destroyed by fire at Oaro yesterday morning. The cottage was occupied by Victor Manawatu. a shearer, his wife and four children. Mr Manawatu was away working at the time, and his wife and children were not in the house when the fire broke out
The cause of the fire is not known, but it is thought to have started in one of the bedrooms at 8.50 a.m. By 9.30 a.m.. the house was destroyed. Residents of the Oaro camp tried to control the fire, but were hampered by a lack of water pressure and dense black smoke. Household fire extinguishers were ineffectual and helpers were unable to save anything.
A detached washhouse was saved, but the only family belongings saved were some children’s clothing on a clothes line. It is not known whether the property was insured.
