NEW TRAFFIC LIGHTS
First Day Of Operation
The new traffic lights at the northern corner of - Cathedral square and at the Colombo streetGloucester street corner were brought into operation yesterday. The City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said the lights bad proved satisfactory for a: first day, although there were some “teething troubles” which might need attention.
There was an accident at the Gloucester street corner early in the afternoon when a boy cyclist was involved in a collision With a motor vehicle, but this was not caused by the lights.
Mr Kellar emphasised that the green light in Colombo street at the northern entrance to the Square gave southbound traffic a right of way only over pedestrian traffic at the crossing. Traffic travelling south through the Square still had to give way to traffic approaching on the right and continuing around the Square eastward. Even though the eastward traffic might be travelling on a slight curve, it was continuing in its direct line and bad a right of way. Traffic turning from the west side of the Square to go south, naturally had to give way to through traffic from Colombo street.
