MERGER OF COUNTIES
“Electors Not In Favour”
It would now seem that Halswell electors are not in favour of
any further discussion on the subject of amalgamating the Halswell and Springs Counties and a rural portion of the Paparua county at present, said Mr Jas. Mackenzie, chairman of the Halswell County Council, at the council’s annual meeting yesterday. “In May, 1955, discussions took place at the instigation of the Local Bodies Commission, on the question of amalgamation of the whole of the Paparua, Springs and Halswell counties, and the chances of a very sound and efficient county being formed appeared to merit sincere investigation,” he said.
“However, the continued objection of the Springs County dele-, gates to amalgamation with the urban portions of the Paparua County resulted in the final scheme being brought down.” 1 The Scheme provided for two counties to be formed, he said.' One consisting of urban and part| of rural Paparua and the other' to consist of Springs and Halswell 1 and part of rural Paparua, said Mr MacKenzie. | “It was obvious that the scheme; would not find favour and it was defeated by a poll of electors,” he said.
