FINE FOR KEEPING GALAH PARROTS
Seaman Pleads Guilty (Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. December 11. A seaman, T. G. Spedding. pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland today to a charge of knowingly possessing three galahs, imported into New Zealand in contravention of the Stock Act, and was fined £5O by Mr C. J. Donne, S.M. Prosecuting for the Collector of Customs, Mr H. Rosen said the Kurow was searched last August for galah parrots thought to be aboard. Spedding said the birds had been put over the side.
Two weeks later a stock inspector for the Agriculture Department called at his home, but Spedding was out. His wife seen and she handed three galdhs to the inspector. ' The next day Spedding demanded their return, saying he bought them from a breeder at Napier.
The Magistrate said he was not prepared to treat the case as trivial. In future even more punitive penalties would be imposed.
