Avenge Very Lame At End Of Fast Sprint

Avenge was very lame after running one of the fastest trials at Riccarton yesterday,' and a start for him in the Knight Memorial Handicap at Hororata is unlikely. Avenge, ridden by E. G. Low, ran seven furlongs in Imin 30 4-ssec, the last halfmile in 52 3-ssec. Most of the work was done wide out on the course proper,, Trialists had fast footing eq the grass but times on the plough were not comparatively fast. Whiohau (A. J. Stokes) and Water Boy (C. T. Wilson) were abreast three lengths clear of Bagman (E. G. Low) after running a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec on the outside of the course proper. Bagman started just behind the others but gave ground before the gallop was half over. The first half mile was solidly run in 51 4-ssec.

Begcaan seldom does anything meritorious in training, but his race form is solid and he will be strongly favoured to win the Hororata Cup. Ration Time (C. T. Wilson) and Tickled Pink (A. H. Eastwood) loafed over a mile in Imin 51 3-5 sec, the last half in 54 3-ssec.

One of Ration Time’s petelk efforts would give her a strong light-weight’s chance in the Derrett Hack Handicap at Hororata.

Sturmer (E. B. Skelton) ran from the mile in Imin 48 4-ssec. His pace fell aw’ay towards the end after he had run the first half mile keenly in *5l 4-ssec. Romancing (L. McGuire) and Kalinita (E. B. Skelton) sprinted six furlongs on terms in Imin 17sec, the last four in 50 4-ssec. It was a good gallop so wide out on the course.

Tintagel (R. W. Gould) and Sea Fox (J. Leach) recorded Imin 19sec for six furlongs and 51 2-5 sec for the last half mile. Consistent

Tintagel has been racing solidly for Mrs J. S. Shaw and should take beating in the Sandown Hack Handicap at Hororata. Olympic Flame (D. J. Thistoll) was going well alongside Rustic (L. J. Ellis) finishing six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last four in 52 l-ssec.

They are fit hacks and will be favourites for their engagements at Hororata.

Pleasant Ways (G. W. Mein), Bolero (W. A. Gibbs), and Heath (R. J. Blair) ran the last four of five furlongs in 52sec. Heath will probably run in the Sandown Hack Handicap at Hororata. Mighty Son (E. B. Skelton) and Volterra (G. W. Mein) recorded 52 l-ssec for half a mile. Braganza (A. J. Stokes), coasting all the way, followed in 55 2-ssec. Summer’s End (C. T. Wilson) sustained a good pace for half a mile and recorded 51sec. Outstanding over this distance was the unraced two-year-old Cadiz (A. J. Stokes), which beat his stablemate Copenhagen (W. Hanlin) by three lengths and recorded 48 3-ssec. Cadiz is a chestnut gelding by Targui from Infinity trained by J. C. Tomkinson for Mr A. N. Smith, of Dunedin. Robin Hood (A. J. Stokes) and Gambol (R. W. Gould) sprinted.from the half-mile on terms in 52 3-3«ec. Debut at HorottttK Robin Hood maljnake Altocd 1mimitation (E. G. Low) and Motueka (L. McGuire) worked away from the nine furlongs, but went leisurely to the end, taking 54 3-ssec for the last half-mile. Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) ran half a mile unhurriedly in Msec. He will probably race next at Washdyke. Rayspar (E. G. Low) was going well alongside King’s Craze (D. J.

Thistoll) after running half a mile in 51 4-ssec.

Abou Ben Adhem (T. Wilson) led Disorder tG. W, Mein) by two lengths finishing half a mile in 52 2-5 sec. Wilson lost an iron near the finish of the trial

General lime (W. Hanlin) sprinted half a mile in 52 3-ssec to shade Jimmy Hill (J. Beck), and beat Fast Seas (B. W. McDonald) easily. Jimmy Hill was the tail-ender starting the trial, but ran the last three furlongs solidly. Bon Salut (A. J.. Stokes) sped over half a mile along the back straight in 49 2-ssec. His stablematc Topa (B. S. Finlayson) took 52 l-ssec. Corowa (W. Hanlin) .and Mirene (G.W. Mein) ran in from the halfmile abreast in 53sec. Lightning Boy (G. W. Mein) and Fair Flow (A. J. Stokes) stayed- on terms over their half-mile, run in 51 3-ssec. Both have been shaping like early winners tor their Riccarton owners, P. J. and Mrs Smith. Smart Sprint Rose of Kildare (L. McGuire), a consistent campaigner last season, showed her fitness for Hororata in a trial with Befana (P. Graham) and Rathfarham <A. H. Eastwood). Rathfarham, after leading early, drifted behind outside the furlong, leaving Rose of Kildare and Befana to finish on terms in 50 l-ssec. It was a good gallop for horses of their class. a McCool (C. McDonald). sprinted half a mile in 51sec. Later his halfsister Shoal (McDonald) recorded 52 4-ssec. Malona (W. Beck) sprinted three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. This promising two-year-old did his work attractively. On the plough, Packwood (A. J. Stokes) and Relinquish (W. A. Gibbs) ran seven furlongs in Imin 33 1-5 sec the last four in 52 3-ssec and the last three in 38 4-ssec. Packwood appeared to be shading his stablemate at the finish. He may take beating in the Derrett Hack Handicap at Hororata. Vestment Lady (T. Smith) was going well alongside Amulette (R. W. Gould) finishing six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the last four in 53sec. Panda (E. G. Low) led Magic Circle (A. J. Stokes) by a neck ending seven furlongs in Imin 314-5 sec, the last four in 53 l-ssec and the final three in 40 4-ssec. Snack (G. Baldwin) and Esla (A. J. Stokes) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 19 4-ssec, the last four in 53 2-ssec. Snack is making steady progress in preparation for his racing career. He is a half-brother by Bal loch to the good winners Chowder and Grand Boy. Lucky Time (R. E. Johnstone) and Lammas (J. L. Coulter) recorded Imin 32 2-ssec for seven furlongs and 52 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Pack Drill (E. G. Low) ran seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec. Ardabil (D. J. Thistoll) joined in for the last six furlongs, run in Imin 18 4-5 sec. Pack Drill, going easily on the outer at the end, recorded 53 4-5 sec for the last half-mile. Pack Drill is a form horse for the Knight Memorial Handicap at Hororata.
