Snails In Milk Bottles
"The Press” Special Service HAMILTON, December 11. Hamilton milk customers last month handed to the Health Department two bottles each with a large snail inside and another bottle containing small fragments of glass. A representative of the department, Mr D. G. Joll, told the Hamilton Milk Board: “This is indicative of carelessness on the part of the milk treatment station."
He thought that the visual Inspection of bottles at the station was not thorough enough. Customers could help by not leaving bottles in the sun, he said. The easein in milk tended to glue objects to the sides of the bottles. This process, which was increased by the heat of the sun, made snails and other things extremely difficult to remove at the milk treatment station. Mr A J. Dehz said the detection of worms during the visual inspection at the treatment irtation could be. made difficult by certain kinds of advertisements on the bottles.
“The customers pay for the bottles, so why have advertising?” he asked.
The chairman (Mr A. R. Griffiths) said customers had a great responsibility to leave their empty milk bottles clean.
