PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY AT CHRISTS COLLEGE

“There is much value in this custom of sabbatical leave, in spite of the views of the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) on its value to university professors,’* said the headmaster of Christ’s College (Mr H. R. Hornsby) at the annual prize-giv-ing ceremony at the college last evening.

“It does enable a man to pause and think, to get things in perspective, to discuss his problems or ideas, if he has any, with men with similar problems elsewhere, to see what new ideas are about, and weigh up their value- with a tnew to their incorporation in part in our own and, finally, there is the great opportunity for some private reading, which too often is neglected dr omitted during term,” he said. “Against this, two-thirds of a school year is missed, and on my return I found myself with about 140 unknown new boys, no longer in their own estimation new boys, who were closed books to me. but nonetheless people who must, if possible, be spoken to on occasions, advised or even punished —about one-quarter of the school in term 111 an unknown quantity to the headmaster. That is over now, and one can face the arrival of some 130 new boys next February with more equanimity.” he said. The school’s orchestra, conducted by Mr R. Mraz, played before the headmaster’s address, and the school’s chapel choir and male voice choir sang a group of songs. Prize winners were:— Class Prizes Form Ilin.—English, D. W. Lackey. Latin. T M.
