Society For Giving Up Smoking
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, December 9.
A society named “Smokers Anonymous” rather on the lines of Alcoholics Anonymous has been formed to help people to give up smoking if they want to.
For the moment the society is concentrating on its present members but on January 1 it intends to advertise so that others who want to give up smoking may join. A number of doctors are associated with the newly-formed society, including a chest specialist, two psychoanalysts, an industrial medical officer, a hospital superintendent, a health educator and two general practitioners. Although their opinions and approaches may vary, the doctors share a common basis of seeking to help people in giving up smoking. t
As a matter of. social or-pre-ventive medicine, the new society has no connexion with the National Society of Non-Smokers whose secretary, the Rev. H. Little, takes a moral and religious standpoint.
