Links With Past

The new two-storey department store that Beaths, Ltd., is occupying at the corner of Clarence street and Riccarton road is not the first tangible link in the firm’s history with the borough of Riccarton. Still standing, but these days scarcely noticed by fast-moving traffic, is the grand old colonial house built by the founder of the firm. The site of the house is at the rear of the Martin-Ormandy industry in Riccarton road. The late Mr G. L. Beath had' the house built about 1870. The accompanying illustration shows a family group posed by it.

Another link with Beath’s and Riccarton’s younger days was the late Mr Charles Ogilvie. Mr Ogilvie was a former managing director of the firm (from 1916 to 1948) and he inaugurated a branch of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school in a room of the Wharenui School. The new multiple department store follows a smaller store which was a pilot venture to acquire a knowledge of local shopping requirements. The new branch (the first suburban branch was in New Brighton) will be under the management of Mr N. J. Daly.
